The second session of the “From Data to Action” webinar series, organized by CDP Türkiye in collaboration with the Nature Conservation Center (DKM), was held on 26 October 2026 under the title “Nature: From Data to Action on Biodiversity and Forests.”
The webinar focused on company data analyzed as part of the CDP Türkiye 2025 Climate and Nature Report, with a focus on biodiversity and forests. The discussion explored how companies’ activities on biodiversity can translate into on-the-ground nature conservation efforts, how geographic and ecological data can be used to identify priority areas, and how the real impact of reported activities on nature can be assessed.
The first part of the webinar presented key findings from the CDP Türkiye 2025 Climate and Nature Report on biodiversity and forests. On biodiversity, the discussion covered companies’ targets, DIRO processes, biodiversity indicators, and approaches to identifying priority locations. On forests, the focus was on deforestation risks, supply chain traceability, and ecosystem restoration and conservation efforts.
The panel brought together Prof. Dr. Cemal Can Bilgin, Academic at the Department of Biology at Middle East Technical University (METU); Galip Çağtay Tufanoğlu, Head of the Ecosystem Services Department at the General Directorate of Forestry, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye; and Tayfun Akusta, Director of Occupational Health and Safety, Environment, Quality Assurance and Sustainability at CarrefourSA, who shared their perspectives from academia, the public sector, and the private sector. The panel was facilitated by Mirhan Köroğlu Göğüş, Country Director of CDP Türkiye, and Yıldıray Lise, Deputy General Manager of DKM.
Prof. Dr. Cemal Can Bilgin discussed the importance of distinguishing between different types of nature conservation activities, such as afforestation, habitat restoration, and species conservation, and designing these efforts to generate genuine ecological impact. He also highlighted the importance of using scientific and ecological data to identify the right priority areas for nature-related action.
Galip Çağtay Tufanoğlu discussed the planning and implementation efforts of the General Directorate of Forestry for the conservation of forest biodiversity and the sustainable management of ecosystem services. He emphasized the importance of moving beyond tree-planting activities and adopting a more comprehensive approach that considers the integrity of forest ecosystems and the services they provide.
Tayfun Akusta addressed how biodiversity and deforestation risks can be identified and prioritized across supply chains from a food retail perspective. He discussed how data on agriculture, water, land use, and deforestation risks can be translated into purchasing criteria, supplier management, and product choices.
The panel brought together perspectives on how the real-world impact of companies’ reported biodiversity and forest activities can be measured, how the right areas can be prioritized, and how nature conservation efforts can move beyond afforestation. The webinar concluded with a Q&A session addressing questions from participants.
