CDP, the world's largest environmental reporting platform whose activities in Turkey are undertaken by Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum, were announced the 2022 Turkey results of CDP on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. The "CDP Climate Change & Water Program/2022 Turkey Report" containing analyses and findings for 2022 CDP Turkey responses and CDP Leaders were announced during the “CDP Turkey 13th Climate Change Conference and Award Ceremony”, which was attended by many high-level participants from various companies, public institutions and NGOs.

CDP's conference this year was held under the theme of "The Evolution of Climate Change Reporting: From Voluntary to Mandatory Reporting." in order to provide the business community in Turkey with valuable insights and guidance on the transition process towards mandatory sustainability reporting.  Having become the norm in voluntary reporting, CDP has demonstrated that it will continue to support companies in the mandatory reporting process and help them prepare for future developments in this regard.

The opening speech of the conference was given by Garanti BBVA Executive Vice President Işıl Akdemir Evlioğlu. One of the main speakers of the conference, Mardi McBrien, the Strategy Director of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Foundation / ISSB, discussed the sustainability reporting practices carried out around the world and the new developments that will be implemented soon. The other main speaker of the conference, Murat Yünlü, the Deputy Chairman of the Public Oversight, Accounting and Auditing Standards Authority (KGK), conveyed the development and future predictions of the subject in Turkey.

CDP Türkiye Projects Manager Mirhan Köroğlu Göğüş, who announced the results of the CDP Climate Change & Water Program 2022 Turkey Report, stated that there has been a significant increase in the number of companies in Turkey that set emissions reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement, and added that 29 companies in Turkey set Science-Based Targets (SBT) in 2022. Of these companies, 8 had their targets approved by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), compared to only 1 in 2020.

At the conference, the panel titled "Evolution of Climate Change Reporting: From Voluntary Reporting to Mandatory Reporting" was moderated by Ata Can Bertay, the Director of Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum. The panel featured Ji Yeon Kim, Senior Manager of Corporate Relations at CDP, Simon C.Y. Wong, member of the Cambridge Sustainability Leadership Institute's Sustainable Management Advisory Board, and Tomasz Gasinski, Director of Sustainability Services at Deloitte Central Europe, as speakers.

During the panel, Ji Yeon Kim discussed the contributions that CDP has made so far to prepare companies for the transition to mandatory sustainability reporting, and how upcoming sustainability reporting requirements that will be standardized can be integrated into CDP questionnaires. Simon C.Y. Wong focused on the management strategies that companies should adopt in the face of mandatory climate reporting and the potential legal responsibilities that may arise, while Tomasz Gasinski provided information on the possible effects of regulatory reporting on companies and how companies that already engage in voluntary reporting can benefit from it.

The number of companies from Turkey that have achieved success in entering the Global A List reached its highest level in 2022. At the conference, CDP Turkey Director Melsa Ararat presented awards to a total of 9 companies from Turkey that entered the Global A List, including Aydem Renewable Energy, Arçelik, Brisa, Carrefoursa, Garanti BBVA, Kordsa, Mavi, Tekfen, and T. Halk Bank.

 

CDP Global Leaders

In 2022, Aydem Renewable Energy became a global leader in both CDP Climate Change and Water Security Programs. The award was presented to the General Manager Ömer Fatih Keha. Brisa, which was among CDP's 2022 Global Climate Leaders, and their award is received by its CEO Haluk Kürkçü, Mavi Giyim's award was received by CEO Cüneyt Yavuz, and Garanti BBVA's award was received by Sustainability Manager Seray İmer.

Arçelik, which was among the 2022 Global Water Leaders of CDP, received its award by Environmental Manager Zeynep Özbek, Carrefoursa's award was received by Human Resources and Sustainability Deputy General Manager Bahar Tura, Kordsa Teknik Tekstil's award was received by Sustainability Group Manager Nevra Aydoğan, Tekfen Holding's award was received by Corporate Affairs Vice President Reha Yolalan, and Türkiye Halk Bankası's award was received by Deputy General Manager Fatih Şahbaz.
